Cited as one of the greatest female MCs of all time, Ms. Lauryn Hill’s prolific rhymes and powerful voice catapulted her into the public eye as a member of the Fugees. The band’s 1996 album, The Score, was certified six times platinum and took home two Grammy Awards for “Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal” and “Best Rap Album.
In 1998, as a solo artist, Ms. Hill established herself as a creative force with her now classic debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The iconic work earned Ms. Hill a record-setting 10 Grammy Award nominations and she took home five, including “Best New Artist” and “Album of the Year.” The album has appeared on countless “Best Of” lists, including Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” SPIN’s “Top 100 Albums of the Last 20 Years,” Vibe’s “150 Albums That Define the Vibe Era,” and the Associated Press’ “10 Best Albums of the 1990s.” To date The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has sold 8 million copies worldwide.
Nas released his debut album entitled Illmatic in 1994 on Columbia Records. Illmatic features Nas's multi-syllabic internal rhyme patterns expressing inner city lyrical themes and narratives based on his native Queensbridge, New York. Since its initial reception, the album has been recognized by writers and music critics as a landmark album in East Coast hip hop. Illmatic went onto make an influential, stylistic change in hip hop at the time. Its influence on subsequent hip hop artists has been attributed to the album's production and Nas's rapping. Several writers have cited Illmatic as one of the quintessential hip hop recordings and one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.
Ms. Lauryn Hill will be performing The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in its entirety, while Nas will perform his Illmatic album when they take the stage in Montreal on September 6th at the Bell Centre.
